Richard Mille watches are usually bold, highly technical, bulky and not very cautious. That’s right…this is also part of the fun. Except for some watches, such as the RM 033 that we reviewed a few weeks ago, we really can’t add the word elegance and dress next to Richard Mille watches. This is especially true for tonneau watches, this style makes the brand very recognizable. At SIHH 2016, the brand decided to change this situation and launched the Richard Mille RM 67-01 Automatic, which is their first ultra-flat and elegant watch with the iconic RM styling. Will it meet our expectations? Let us find out.

When we first talked about Richard Mille RM 67-01 in an article before SIHH in 2016, we were impressed and very happy. Again, we are not against the brand’s sporty and large watches, such as the RM11-01 chronograph or RM 61-01 Yohan Blake limited edition, mainly because, in addition to their size, these watches (and the rest of the barrel -Richard Mille’s shape watches) are very comfortable to wear on the wrist, and the design is very unique. It’s just that, sometimes, you might enjoy the same style in a more refined way, with less visible things on your wrist, a watch that can be worn with a suit — or just on your wrist if you want it to be smaller Of slimmer watches. This is the main goal of this Richard Mille RM 67-01 Automatic Extra Flat: to combine Richard Mille’s iconic shape with a slim profile-this is not easy to achieve considering the curved surface of the watch.

One solution might be to imagine the movement following the curve of the case. Well, interesting idea…but not a simple idea. This would mean curved plates and bridges, slightly tapered gears, barrels on a different horizon from the rest of the movement, dome hands… This is an automatic movement, which means that even the rotor is It should be domed. Yes, we would love to see Richard Mille make such a watch, but it is obvious that this will result in a very complicated and expensive timepiece. Another solution might be to implement the Calibre RMXP1 used in Richard Mille RM033 with a micro-rotor and thickness of 2.6 mm. However, this movement with a diameter of 33 mm has a problem: it is round. It is quite difficult to want a round movement in a slim tonneau watch. Therefore, Richard Mille’s watchmaker created a special movement for Richard Mille RM 67-01, the same shape as the case, Calibre CRMA6.

The new Calibre CRMA6 movement is flat in every respect. Yes, it is flat, because even with the central rotor, its height is only 3.6 mm. Compared with several other movements, even if it is not very flat, it is still impressive considering the central rotor. Then, its shape is also flat. It is not curved. This will affect the shape of the watch-will be described in detail later. The movement itself is not circular, but it follows the lines of the case and also presents a barrel shape, which is both visually pleasing and technically interesting in order to shape the entire watch around the movement. In the tradition of RM watches, the movement of Richard Mille RM 67-01 Automatic Extra Flat adopts a hollow design with modern but high-end performance.

The bottom plate is made of grade 5 titanium, sandblasted, manually chamfered, and coated with gray plasma treatment. The bridge plates have the same finish (but black). The movement is equipped with a solid platinum central rotor. It is assembled by titanium spline screws. As you can see in this close-up photo, the parts are carefully machined, using straight brushes, chamfers on spokes, diamond polished parts or polished pivots. All bridges are opened to display technical elements, such as the opened barrel, gear train and escapement. The movement vibrates 28.800 times per hour and has a power reserve of 50 hours.

Similarly, like most RM watches, when the main board is turned on, the movement can be seen through the sapphire crystal dial. On this Richard Mille RM 67-01, the hollow board (with application index on the top) displays straight lines and graphic shapes to create an architectural effect. The 12 numbers are made of solid metal and are mounted on two rigid titanium rails directly connected to the movement, creating an interesting sense of depth. The hands (look closely at the details of these hands) show the actual pointed and beveled shape of all elegant RM watches. Speaking of shape, the case of Richard Mille RM 67-01 is very similar to Richard Mille, but at the same time slightly different, especially when viewed from the side. Its dimensions are 38.7 mm x 47.52 mm x 7.75 mm. So it is not only thin but also quite long. The reason for this is the need for a flat watch and a flat movement. Therefore, if you look closely, the central part of the case back (which contains the movement) is flat. The case will only bend at the edges. The same was true for RM033, but we experienced a comfort that was incomparable with other products in the RM series. Here, with reasonable size, we can once again prove that this Richard Mille RM 67-01 is a comfortable masterpiece. It fits the wrist perfectly, and the back of the watch fits the wrist perfectly.

Richard Mille RM 67-01 is available in multiple versions: titanium, platinum (the one shown here) and rose gold. This watch is obviously more versatile than the other products in the series and can easily be imagined as a unisex watch (don’t look at the white strap here.
