Zenith Pilot Type 20 Extra Special Silver
This is Zenith’s first silver case replica watches uk.
While not unheard of, silver cases are rather unusual in today’s watchmaking industry. Since more durable white metals such as steel and titanium are readily available, watchmakers often move in this direction and then opt for platinum or white gold when pursuing higher-end performance. In a way, the relative rarity of silver watches is a shame, as silver has a warmth of its own, and it tends to take on a patina in a way that many watch lovers, especially those who prefer a vintage aesthetic, will appreciate .
The Zenith Pilot Type 20 Extra Special we see here is Zenith’s first silver case watch. This is the first pre-Baselworld version we’ve seen from Zenith, and this new Pilot’s Type 20 comes with a brushed silver dial that matches the case. The dial also has a riveted pattern that directly alludes to retro aviation. Oversized numerals and hands, paired with an oversized crown and a large 45mm case make for a very solid-looking tool watch. Inside is the automatic Zenith Elite automatic movement.
The dial on this watch is interesting to me. Besides being made of unusual materials like the case, the dial has a pattern I haven’t seen on any watch before. With a diameter of 45mm, this watch is a size that will appeal to those looking for a truly bold pilot’s watch that will impress. The Zenith Flying Instruments decoration on the back of the case is a reminder of Zenith’s long history of making watches for aviation. In fact, Zenith has trademarked the Pilot name as it applies to the cheap watch.
Common in jewelry but rare in watchmaking, silver is a material that is sure to take on its own personality depending on how it is worn and the conditions the wearer is subjected to. I think we’ve seen bronze watches grow in popularity for similar reasons. I wonder if we’ll also see more silver models hitting the market in the near future.
2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the El Primero, and watch watchers are really paying attention to what Zenith may or may not be doing in the chronograph space this year. This one is obviously not that one, but it’s a nice aviator with an interesting case and dial.
