Bell & Ross Launches Limited Edition BR 03-94 Multimeter Watch

As mechanical sophistication progresses, chronographs are arguably the most versatile option. The applications for dynamically tracking elapsed time are almost endless, especially when superimposing a second set of information to determine the average rate. Tachymeters are naturally the most common example in modern watchmaking, but scales that measure everything from heart rate to sound distance are far from unheard of, especially in more classic-style chronograph designs. Fake Bell & Ross changes that stylistic paradigm with its latest edition, bringing its bold, modern aircraft instrument design language into a multi-scale chronograph with sharp character and a fitness focus. The new limited edition Bell & Ross BR 03-94 Multimeter offers a bright and vivid look to a multi-scale chronograph, which should provide a wealth of useful information in an eye-catching package.

The Bell & Ross BR 03-94 multimeter shares its 42mm matte black ceramic case with several other models in the BR 03-94 series. Like the rest of the collection, the case features the brand’s signature cockpit instrumentation-inspired rounded square shape with a narrowly chamfered bezel, prominent decorative screws and short wedge-shaped lugs. Bell & Ross has subtly incorporated a chronograph complication into this familiar form in the image, with the oblong pushers complementing the overall form. In keeping with the sporty focus of the BR 03-94 multimeter, Bell & Ross rates the watch as sport-friendly to 100 meters of water resistance.

At first glance, the dial of the Bell & Ross BR 03-94 Multimeter is nothing like the gorgeous and sophisticated multi-scale chronograph designs of the past. Visually, it has more in common with retro-styled decompression-scale divers such as the Mido Ocean Star Decompression Timer 1961 and earlier iterations of the Fortis Marinemaster than with chronograph design cues, with its wide variety of The colors are broken down into several small tables. On closer inspection, however, the BR 03-94 multimeter elegantly integrates a wide range of data into a snappy but fully functional athlete timing tool. Not counting the external seconds scale on the acute-angle rehaut, the dial of the BR 03-94 multimeter includes no less than five concentric chronograph scales, each with its own color. The bright orange outermost track is the pulsometer scale, which can be used to measure heart rate quickly and accurately, while the next ring in the sequence is a muted algal green and features a rare asthma meter scale for tracking the wearer’s breathing rate.

Of course, the two scales are closely related and provide useful data during a workout, but the BR 03-94 multimeter’s motion profile also carries over to the rest of the dial. The white middle track is probably the one most familiar to enthusiasts, and the standard tachymeter scale is calibrated to the car. However, the last two tracks in canary yellow and khaki are also speedometers, but these are calibrated specifically for cyclists and runners, respectively. Few tachymeter scales have ditched the traditional 500 to 60 sequence in favor of a slow-paced scale, and the addition of two separate scales of this type is sure to make the BR 03-94 multimeter stand out in sports chronograph designs. With colors and proportions so complex, it can be difficult for the wearer to decipher all the data at hand, but Bell & Ross alleviates the legibility problem with several clever design solutions in the image.

First, the outer edge of the dial from 6 o’clock to 12 o’clock has a chart explaining each of the five chronograph scales and their recommended timing lengths, which should be handy during vigorous exercise. Given the size of these scales and the variety of vibrant colors used, Bell & Ross wisely reduced the basic dial elements of the BR 03-94 multimeter to a simple, easy-to-read form. The main earpiece consists of elements with the classic white chronograph seconds hand, while the subdials accommodate the wide and complex graduated track. Rather than interrupting the sub-dial scales and coloured tracks, Bell & Ross only prints half a scale for the 3 and 9 o’clock sub-dials, compensating with white and orange double-ended sub-dial hands. It’s a striking, dramatic look that might divide aficionados, but it offers a relatively simple solution to the legibility problem of the sub-dial.

On the other hand, a date window is a less efficient addition. This circular skeletonized date display is located in the middle of the printed chronograph scale between 12 and 1 o’clock, clearly disrupting the overall balance of the design in exchange for limited practical functionality.

Bell & Ross uses the BR-CAL.301 automatic chronograph movement based on the ETA 2894-2 to power the BR 03-94 multimeter. The BR-CAL.301 is a common item in the brand’s chronograph collection, offering a relatively standard 42-hour power reserve at a beat rate of 28,800 bph. To complete the design, Bell & Ross paired the watch with a black rubber layered perforated strap.
