Three new Ulysse Nardin Marine Torpileur models, incl. brand new double time
UN expands the classic Marine collection with a new travel model.
The Marine Torpilleur collection, which debuted in 2017, was fully updated last year with new sophisticated models that pay homage to the brand’s long history in marine precision timepieces. The Marine Torpilleur takes retro design cues but in a lighter, younger, more versatile package like the fast, motorized torpedo boat that inspired its name. Elegant, discreet and distinctive, these watches have a lot to love both mechanically and visually. For the 2022 collection, Ulysse Nardin expands its Marine Torpilleur collection with three new models that are part of the permanent collection, including the new Dual Time watch.
ULYSSE NARDIN MARINE TORPILEUR
Founded in Le Locle in 1846 by Ulysse Nardin, the young watchmaker cemented his reputation with chronometers. By the 1870s, the manufacturer supplied precision nautical deck timers to more than 50 naval and merchant shipping companies. This specific and complex area of watchmaking has become an iconic element of the brand’s portfolio and is widely used in modern watches. Launched in 2017, the Marine Torpilleur is a smaller, lighter and less expensive version of its Marine range. It takes its name from the torpedo boat or torpedo boat.
The key elements of the Marine Torpilleur collection are the elongated fluted bezel, elongated Roman numerals, spade and whip hands, and dual counters at 12 and 6 o’clock (except for the chronograph and tourbillon) , a display reminiscent of a marine chronometer. And, of course, the brand’s signature silicon technology. Continuing last year’s improved series, United now brings more variety.
MARINE TORPILEUR DUAL TIME
The first new model is actually an entirely new watch, with the brand’s iconic dual time zone display incorporated into the collection for the first time. Invented by Ludwig Oechslin in 1994, it relies on the ultra-practical GMT± function to quickly correct the local time via two buttons, while the reference time aperture at 9 o’clock continuously displays the home time. Then, in 2014, Ulysse Nardin introduced the UN-334, the first in-house movement with a GMT± function.
This year, we saw the launch of the Ulysse Nardin Gyro Dual Hour, combining this functionality and advanced movement with the streamlined look of the collection. It also includes a large date window and a small seconds hand. The Marine Torpilleur Dual Time features a polished and satin-finished 44mm stainless steel case with a dark blue dial with a variety of textures. Inside, the in-house automatic movement has a 48-hour power reserve and uses silicon technology, the escape wheel, anchor and hairspring are all made from this non-magnetic, elastic and durable material.
Quick Facts: 44mm Stainless Steel Case, Sapphire Crystal, 50M Water Resistance – Blue Sunburst and Matte Dial – Caliber UN-334, Automatic, Internal, 4 Hz, 48 Hours Power Reserve, GMT Function, w/+ And – push buttons – blue alligator strap on folding clasp – ref. 3343-320-3A/1A.
MARINE TORPILLEUR TOURBILLON white enamel
Last year, Ulysse Nardin launched a limited edition Marine Torpilleur Tourbillon with a rose gold case and black Grand Feu enamel dial. The model returns this year in a more refined, discreet version that’s also easier to use. In fact, the 42mm case is made of stainless steel. The dial, although still made by Donzé Cadrans and handcrafted in Grand Feu enamel, features white and blue numerals with classic nautical codes.
Powering this high-end version is the in-house self-winding movement UN-128. As you can see, the large aperture at 6 o’clock reveals an oversized tourbillon, but there’s more here. In fact, it relies on silicon technology to bring a constant escapement, thanks to Ulysse Nardin’s patented flying silicon anchor system.
Quick Facts: 42mm Stainless Steel Case, Sapphire Crystal, 50M Water Resistance – White Enamel Dial, Blue Numerals – Inside, Automatic Movement UN-128, Constant Force Tourbillon, 2.5 Hz, 60 Hours Power Reserve – Blue Alligator Leather Foldover Clasp – Ref. 1283-310-0AE/1A.
GOLD MARINE TORPILEUR Moon Phase
New for 2021 also includes an elegant and refined moonphase watch with a stainless steel case and a blue or white dial, limited to 300 pieces each. The Marine Torpilleur Moonphase returns this year as part of the permanent collection with a 42mm rose gold case. Thanks to its vertical layout, the white varnished dial perfectly incorporates the lunar complication without compromising the iconic look of the nautical model. The warm-toned gold complements the navy blue notes on the strap and numerals.
Inside the case is the chronometer-grade automatic movement UN-119 with a silicon hairspring and a DiamonSil escape wheel and anchor. The technology, patented in 2009, relies on a plasma surface treatment process that combines silicon and synthetic diamond to optimize performance and improve anti-magnetic and anti-friction properties.
Quick Facts: 42mm Rose Gold Case, Sapphire Crystal, 50M Water Resistance – White Lacquered Dial, Blue Numerals – Self-winding Caliber UN-119, Silicon and DiamonSil Elements, 4 Hz, 60 Hours Power Reserve – Blue Alligator leather folding clasp – ref. 1192-310-0A/1A.
